□ 올해 3월에 발매된 "메탈갓" 주다스 프리스트(Judas Priest)의 18번째 정규앨범 "Firepower". 헤비메탈을 좋아하는 입장에서 주다스 프리스트의 새 앨범은 언제나 기다려질 수 밖에 없다. 특히 앨범 발매 전에 선공개 되었던 "Lightning Strike"와 "Firepower"가 대단히 마음에 들었기 때문에 새 앨범에 대한 기대는 더 커졌다. 하지만 기타리스트 글렌 팁톤(Glenn Tipton)의 파킨슨 병으로 인해 앞으로 밴드의 투어에 함께 할 수 없다는 뉴스를 접하고는 불안감도 커졌다. 어쩌면 이 앨범이 주다스 프리스트의 마지막 앨범이 되지 않을까? 

이런 여러가지 복잡한 기대 속에서 접한 주다스 프리스트의 새 앨범 "Firepower". 강렬한 기타 리프와 롭 헬포드의 스크리밍으로 주다스 프리스트의 건재함을 알리는 오프닝 곡 "Firepower"로 시작되는 새 앨범은  전성기 주다스 프리스트의 장점이 아주 매끈하고 깔끔한 사운드로 뽑혀 기대 이상의 만족감을 주는 앨범이다. 

"Firepower"는 톰 알롬(Tom Allom)과 앤디 스닙(Andy Sneap), 두 명의 프로듀서의 참여가 화제가 되었다. 톰 알롬은 "British Steel"부터 "Ram It Down"까지 전성기를 같이 했던 프로듀서이고, 앤디 스닙은 억셉트(Accept)의 최근 앨범들(Blood Of The Nations, Stalingrad, Blind Rage, The Rise Of Chaos), 테스타먼트(Testament)의 "Dark Roots Of Earth"등을 프로듀스한 현대적 감각을 갖춘 프로듀서인지라 이 둘의 시너지 효과가 새 앨범에 미치는 영향에 대해 기대가 컸었다. 앞서 말했던 앨범의 만족스러운 퀄리티는 아마도 이 두 명의 프로듀서의 시너지 효과가 긍정적 화학작용을 일으킨 덕분이라 하겠다. 

음반 해설지에 김경진님이 두 프로듀서의 역할을 잘 정리를 해놓으셔서 옮겨 본다. 

물론 밴드의 원숙한 역량이 바탕에 자리하지만 앨범이 제 모습을 갖추는 데 중요한 역할을 한 인물은 앤디 스니프다. 톰 알롬이 오래 전 해왔던 익숙한 방식으로 옛친구들의 음악 유산과 그 거칠고 투박한 색채를 제대로 뽑아줬다면 앤디는 그러한 고전적 사운드를 다듬고 섬세함과 세련미라는 특성을 지니는 현대적 분위기를 절묘하게 녹여내 빈틈없이 풍성한 질감을 실어 주었다.

주다스 프리스트하면 무엇보다도 "철혈 보컬", "쇳소리 보컬"의 롭 헬포드가 떠오른다. 하지만 새 앨범이 나올 때마다 걱정되는 것도 롭 헬포드다. 이제 70을 바라보는 보컬리스트의 기량은 문제 없는 것일까? 이런 질문에 롭 헬포드는 발표되는 앨범마다 아무런 문제가 없다고 답해줬었다. 그리고 이번 앨범에서도 그 답은 같다. 문제 없다. 

롭 헬포드는 전성기 만큼의 무자비한 고음의 샤우팅은 아니지만 이번 앨범에서도 여전히 날카로운 스크리밍과 사악한 느낌의 중저음의 보컬의 조화를 통해 건재함을 알리고 있다. 수록곡 중 "Evil Never Dies"와 "Necromancer"는 롭 헬포드의 보컬 퍼포먼스가 인상적이었던 곡.

주다스 프리스트의 자랑 트윈 기타도 건재하다. 글렌 팁톤과 리치 포크너(Richie Faulkner)의 트윈 기타는 리프와 솔로 플레이를 주고 받으며 현란한 연주를 보여주는 "Lightning Strike"나 "Traitors Gate"같은 빠른 곡에서 뿐만 아니라, "Rising From Ruins"나 "Spectre" 같은 미들 템포의 곡에서도 불을 뿜으며 곡의 긴장감과 비장함을 극대화 시켜준다. 

2011년 팀에 합류한 기타리스트 리치 포크너는 글렌 팁톤과 멋진 호흡을 보여주고 있으며, 핼포드, 팁톤과 함께 곡 작업에도 참여하면서 주다스 프리스트에 새 기운을 불어넣고 있다. 주다스 프리스트는 1989년에 드러머 스캇 트레비스(Scott Travis)를 영입하면서 밴드 활동의 전환점을 맞았었다. 그리고 나온 작품이 헤비메탈 역사에 길이 남을 명작 "Painkiller". 리치 포크너도 이번 앨범을 통해서 자신의 존재감을 확실히 각인 시키고 있다. 

위에 언급한 곡들 외에도 80년대 전성기 주다스 프리스트의 분위기를 풍기는 "Flame Thrower", 예전 명곡 "Blood Red Skies"를 연상하게 하는 비장미 넘치는 "Children Of The Sun" 등도 놓쳐서는 안될 곡들이다. 다만 마지막 수록곡 "Sea Of Red"는 개인적으로 불호. 이 곡은 과거 "Stained Class"의 수록곡 "Beyond The Realms Of Death"나 "Angel Of Retribution"의 수록곡 "Lochness" 같은 주다스 프리스트 표 발라드인데 개인적으로 이들의 발라드에는 별로 매력을 못느껴서, 이 곡도 심심하게 느껴졌다. 하지만 앨범 듣는 재미를 떨어뜨릴 정도는 아니다. 

"Firepower"는 빌보드 앨범 차트 5위를 기록하면서 주다스 프리스트 커리어 최고의 순위를 기록했다. 이 밖에 하드락 앨범 차트 1위, 탑 락 앨범 차트 2위, UK 앨범 차트 5위 등 차트 성적도 훌륭하다. 완벽한 주다스 프리스트의 컴백이다. 부디 이번 앨범이 이들의 마지막 앨범이 되지 않기를.
