2018년 2월 3일자 빌보드 메인스트림 락 송 차트.

로얄 블러드(Royal Blood)의 "I Only Lie When I Love You"가 6주 연속 1위를 굳건하게 지키고 있는 가운데, 파파 로치(Papa Roach)의 "Born For Greatness"가 3위(4위->3위)까지 올라왔다. "LifeLine", "Face Everything And Rise", "help"에 이어서 파파로치의 4번째 메인스트림 락 송 차트 1위 곡이 탄생할지 지켜봐야할 듯하다. 

그레타 반 플릿(Greta Van Fleet)의 "Safari Song"의 상승세도 주목할만 하다. 지난 주 8위에서 5위로 상승. 반면 파이브 핑거 데스 펀치(Five Finger Death Punch)의 "Trouble"과 씨오리 오브 어 데드맨(Theory Of A Deadman)의 "Rx"는 눈에 띄게 하락세. 두 밴드 모두 후속곡들이 차트에 진입해있다. 조만간 자리 바꿈이 있을 것으로 보인다. 

푸 파이터스(Foo Fighters)의 "The Sky Is A Neighborhood"가 10위권 밖으로 밀려났고(12위), 스톤 템플 파일러츠(Stone Temple Pilots)의 "Meadow"가 7위로 탑 10에 새롭게 진입했다. "Meadow"는 2013년 린킨 파크(Linkin' Park)의 채스터 베닝턴(Chester Bennington)과 함께한 "Out Of Time"이후에 오랜만에 탑 10에 진입한 스톤 템플 파일러츠의 곡이 되었다. 그리고보니 스톤 템플 파일러츠의 목소리였던 스캇 웨일랜드(Scott Weiland), 채스터 배닝턴 두 사람 모두 이제 이 세상에 없다. 안타까운 일.

마지막으로 6주째 2위를 지키고 있는 시더(Seether)의 "Betray And Degrade"는 과연 콩라인을 탈출할 것인가? 

탑 10 이후의 순위는 아래와 같다.

지난 주에 차트에 진입한 레드 선 라이징(Red Sun Rising)의 신곡 "Deathwish"(27위->21위)가 상승세다. 씨오리 오브 어 데드맨의 "Straight Jacket"(37위->27위), 파이브 핑거 데스 펀치의 "Gone Away"(34위->25위)도 순위가 쑥쑥 올랐다. 조만간 기존에 탑 10에 있던 곡들과 자리 바꿈을 하지 않을까? 20위의 마릴린 맨슨(Marilyn Manson"의 "Kill4me"도 다음 주면 차트 아웃될 것 같다. 

쓰리 데이즈 그레이스(Three Days Grace)의 신곡 "The Mountain"이 31위로 차트에 첫 진입했다. 쓰리 데이즈 그레이스는 메인스트림 락 송 차트에 초강자 중에 하나. 12곡의 메인스트림 락 송 차트 1위곡을 포함하여 총 17곡의 탑 10 곡을 보유하고 있다. 발매한 스튜디오 앨범이 5개인 걸 감안하면 메인스트림 락 송 차트의 터줏대감이라고 할 수 있다. 쓰리 데이즈 그레이스는 2013년 보컬리스트를 아담 곤티에(Adam Gontier)에서 매트 왈스트(Matt Walst)로 교체한 후 2015년에 앨범 "Human"을 발표하면서 과도기를 거쳤다. "The Mountain"이 수록된 이들의 새앨범 "Outsider"는 2018년 3월에 발매될 예정. 

쓰리 데이즈 그레이스의 신곡과 함께 차트에 새로 등장한 곡은 어 데이 투 리멤버(A Day To Remember)의 "Same About You". 어 데이 투 리멤버가 2016년에 발매한 6번째 스튜디오 앨범 "Bad Vibrations" 수록곡으로, "Paranoia", "Naivety", "Bullfight"에 이어 4번째로 차트에 진입한 곡이다. 이전 곡들에 비해서는 다이나믹한 면이 부족해서 심심한 느낌을 준다. 

차트 아웃된 곡들은 서티 세컨즈 투 마스(Thirty Seconds To Mars)의 "Walk On Water"(지난 주 15위), 블랙 라벨 소사이어티(Black Label Society"의 "Room Of Nightmares"(지난 주 32위, 잭 와일드 형님 안녕~~) 등 2곡.

□ L.A. Guns가 2017년에 발매한 앨범. 통산 11번째 스튜디오 앨범이다. L.A. Guns라니, 이야..이게 언제적 L.A. Guns야. L.A. Guns는 글램 메탈의 전성기인 80년대 말에서 90년대 초까지 강호를 주름잡던 밴드 중에 하나였다. 이 시기에 이들이 발표한 앨범들, L.A. Guns(1988년), Cocked & Loaded(1989년), Hollywood Vampires(1991년)는 글램 메탈의 명반들로 차트 성적도 괜찮았고, 상업적으로도 성공을 거둔 작품들이었다. 

하지만.

1990년대 불어닥친 그런지 열풍에 L.A. Guns의 전성기는 대부분의 글램 메탈 밴드들이 그러했듯이 짧게 끝났고, 이후 L.A. Guns는 다시 메인스트림에 복귀하지 못했다. 이후에 L.A. Guns는 핵심멤버들이 뿔뿔이 흩어지고, 보컬인 필 루이스(Phil Lewis)와 기타리스트 트레이스 건즈(Tracii Guns)가 각각 L.A. Guns라는 이름으로 활동하는 등 부침을 겪으면서 관심에서 멀어졌다. 앨범도 꾸준하게 발표하긴 했는데 예전만큼의 평가를 받지 못했다. 앨범 퀄리티도 그렇지만 일단 글램 메탈이 이미 먹히는 장르가 아니라서. 나도 "American Hardcore"나 "Man In The Moon" 같은 앨범을 소장하고 있지만 속직히 의리로 산 측면이 컸다. 

그러다가 2016년 즈음에 밴드들의 클래식 라인업 재결합이 유행이었다. 건즈 앤 로지즈의 액슬 로즈와 슬래쉬, 더프 맥케이건이 다시 뭉쳐서 공연을 다녔고, 도켄의 돈 도켄과 조지 린치도 일본에서 한 무대에 올랐다. 그 와중에 L.A. Guns도 완전한 클래식 라인업은 아니었지만 필 루이스와 트레이시 건즈가 다시 모여서 공연을 한다는 소식을 듣게 되었다. 그리고 공연 뿐만 아니라 새 앨범도 녹음한다는 소식도 연이어 들려오고. 

얼마 후에 새 앨범에 수록될 곡 "Speed"가 공개되었다. 이 곡을 처음 듣고 "우와~" 하는 감탄이 나왔다. 전성기 L.A. Guns의 에너지가 느껴졌다. '오랜만에 모여서 제대로 된 음악을 하는구나. 이거 기대해봐도 되겠다.' 싶었다. 앨범이 발매 후에도 간만에 앨범 차트에도 진입하고 평이 좋았다. 좋아. 도프레코드에서 앨범 구입 결정. 

앞에 이야기했듯 L.A. Guns의 "The Missing Peace"는 2002년에 발매된 "Waking The Dead" 이후 처음으로 필 루이스와 트레이시 건즈가 다시 모여서 만든 앨범이다. 간단한 감상을 적어보면.

앨범의 전반부는 거칠고 묵직한 맛이 있다. 제목처럼 빠르고 격렬한 곡 "Speed"를 중심으로 "It's all the Same to Me"나 "Sticky Fingerz" 같은 곡들에서 L.A. Guns의 헤비함을 맛볼 수 있다. 5번 트랙 "Christine"은 이들의 히트곡 "Ballad Of Jayne"이나 "Crystal Eyes"를 떠올리게 하는 파워 발라드. 필 루이스의 보컬은 이런 파워 발라드에서 더 빛을 발한다. 

 "Christine"로 앨범 중간에 숨을 한 번 고르고 나면 이후에는 "Baby Gotta Fever", "Kill It or die","Don't Bring a Knife to a Gunfight"같은 글램메탈 또는 블루지한 느낌의 아메리칸 하드락 풍의 곡들이 포진하고 있다. 앨범 전반부에 비교하면 좀 더 밝고 경쾌한 느낌을 주는데, 이들의 전성기 시절 향수를 느낄 수 있다. 

앨범에는 9번 트랙 "The Flood's the Fault of the Rain"은 애니멀즈(The Animals)의 "The House Of The Rising Sun"이나 이들의 1집 수록곡 "One Way Ticket"과 비슷한 느낌을 주는 파워 발라드로 트레이시 건즈의 애절한 기타 솔로가 인상적인 곡. 앨범의 마지막을 장식하는 "Gave It All Away"는 필 루이스의 애절한 보컬이 돋보이는 클래시컬한 분위기의 곡으로 여운을 남기며 앨범을 마무리한다.  

앨범 전체적으로 전성기 글램 메탈과 파워 발라드의 향수+무겁고 거친 색다른 모습이 잘 버무려진 L.A. Guns의 성공적인 복귀작이라고 평할 수 있겠다.
