소닉스 벤치에 새바람을 불어넣어줄 수 있을까?

올해 드래프트는 소닉스가 전력보강을 꽤할 수 있는 기회라고 여겨졌다. 드래프트 뎁스는 그다지 깊지않지만 소닉스가 충분히 전력보강에 필요한 자원을 보충할만큼 높은 10픽을 가지고 있었기 때문이었다. 팬들이 원했던 선수는 레이 앨런과 라샤드 루이스의 백업을 해줄 수 있는 퍼리미터 수비가 좋은 스윙맨이었다. 로드니 카니나 로니 브루어가 주로 언급되는 선수였다. 하지만 드래프트 당일 소닉스의 선택은 이름도 읽기 힘든 무하마드 세네라는 7푸터였다. 당시 소닉스의 선택에 대해서 팬들의 평가는 비난 일색이었다. "두 시즌 연속으로 7푸터를 뽑았는데 또 뽑았냐?", "2,3번 백업은 어쩔꺼냐?", "지금 스위프트, 페트로 무시하나요?" 등등. 나도 드래프트를 문자중계로 보면서 설마 트레이드가 있겠지 기대를 했었는데 결국 없었다.


소닉스의 매니지먼트는 세네 픽에 대해 이렇게 평가했다. "팀에 2,3번 스윙맨 백업이 필요한 것은 알고 있다. 로드니 카니와 로니 브루어는 충분히 좋은 선수다. 하지만 우리는 지난 시즌에 뽑아논 미카엘 젤라발이 있다. 젤라발은 카니, 브루어와 견주에 전혀 뒤쳐지지 않는 선수다. 따라서 우리는 7푸터 세네에게 우리의 픽을 행사했다. 리그에서 7푸터는 흔하지 않다." 젤라발에 대한 소닉스 매니지먼트의 믿음이 느껴지는 부분이었다. 그리고 소닉스는 레알 마드리드에서 뛰고 있던 젤라발을 바이아웃을 통해 영입하면서 자신의 믿음이 변하지 않았음을 보여줬다.


2005년 드래프트에서 젤라발이 뽑힌 이후 젤라발의 경기를 구해보려고 노력을 했었다. 젤라발이 속한 ACB리그 경기를 보진 못했지만 프랑스 국가대표 유니폼을 입은 젤라발의 경기는 유로바스켓 2005와 월드 챔피언십 2006을 통해서 볼 수 있었다.


프랑스 국가대표팀 경기를 통해서 본 젤라발은 비이기적이었다. 국가대표팀 부동의 선발 3번임에도 불구하고 슛 욕심이 많지 않았다. 자신보다 더 좋은 기회를 잡은 선수에게 기꺼이 패스를 밀어주는 선수였으며 그에 걸맞는 패싱력과 코트 비전을 가지고 있었다. 반면 수비에서는 매우 적극적이었다. 팀 디펜스에 대한 이해도 좋았다. 이런 능력으로 젤라발은 프랑스가 유로바스켓과 월드챔피언 십에서 좋은 성적을 내는데 크게 공헌을 했다.


하지만 NBA에 온 젤라발은 쉽게 경기에 나서지 못했다. 리그에 적응하는 시기이기도 했지만 팀에는 이미 레이 앨런-라샤드 루이스라는 확실한 선발에 데미언 윌킨스, 얼 와슨등이 백업으로 자리를 확실히 하고 있었기 때문이다. 가비지 타임에만 나오는 젤라발은 유타와 필리에서 활약하고 있는 카니, 브루어에 자꾸만 비교가 되었고, 세네가 삽질할 때마다 "릭 선드 ㅆ ㅂ"라는 말이 저절로 나오곤 했다.


그러던 젤라발에게 드디어 기회가 왔다. 팀 성적이 시원치않고 와슨과 윌킨스가 계속해서 부진하자 힐 감독은 로테이션에 변화를 주기로 결정했다. 그 첫번째가 닉 콜리슨의 선발출전, 페트로의 벤치 출전이었고, 두번째가 젤라발의 로테이션 합류였다. 로테이션에 변화를 준 첫 경기에서 닉 콜리슨이 커리어 하이를 찍어주면서 맹활약한 것에 가리긴 했지만 젤라발도 커리어 하이 득점을 찍어주면서 인상적인 모습을 보여줬다. 26분간 경기를 뛴 젤라발은 여전히 비이기적인 모습이었고 자신이 얼마나 팀 플레이에 적합한 선수인지를 보여줬다. 또 자신에게 기회가 왔을때는 확실하게 득점을 해주는 모습까지 보여줬다. 스테판 잭슨에게 포스트업에서 발리긴 했지만 그것을 제외하고는 페이스업을 해오는 상대에게는 좋은 수비를 보여줬다. 대인 수비 뿐만 아니라 팀 디펜스에서도 소닉스의 모토인 헬프&리커버를 충실히 수행하는 모습이었다.


힐 감독은 전부터 젤라발의 로테이션 합류를 생각했었다고 했다. 하지만 와슨, 윌킨스와의 출전시간 분배문제 때문에 망설여왔었다고 하는데, 와슨, 윌킨스의 지속적인 부진으로 결단을 내렸다고 한다. 젤라발은 일단 자신에게 주어진 기회의 첫 단추는 잘 꿰었다고 생각된다. 젤라발의 로테이션 합류로 인해 기존의 윌킨스나 와슨의 분발도 기대해 볼 수 있을 것이다.

그동안 벤치의 부진으로 골머리를 썪어왔던 소닉스가 젤라발의 합류로 다시 살아날 수 있을까? 적어도 지금까지의 경기들에서는 가능성이 보이고 있다.



Gelabale’s Got French Game


For the closing stretch of two tight games that would eventually be decided on the final shot, Seattle SuperSonics Coach Bob Hill rolled out a lineup with starters Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis and Luke Ridnour. One night, Hill used Nick Collison at center, the next Chris Wilcox - both starters. The fifth player in Hill's lineup, however, was a surprise - rookie Mickaël Gelabale, who had played sparingly before his career-long 26-minute stint against the Pacers on Friday, joined his more heralded teammates on the floor.

"I've got confidence in him," says Hill. "When we go small, depending on the residue of the bench and where we are at the end of the game, obviously I don't have a problem having him on the floor."

To him, it shows that the coach has confidence in him," adds Assistant Coach Gordon Chiesa. "That's a big part of the NBA. Add to that it shows that his teammates have confidence in him. That's when you grow as a player, when teammates respect your game, and he has."

Since the preseason, when he averaged 3.6 points and 1.5 assists per game, Gelabale's progress had been largely invisible to Sonics fans. He played just 32 minutes over the team's first 16 games, scoring two points and grabbing two rebounds. Behind the scenes, the coaching staff continued to be pleased with Gelabale's progress.

Combined with the need to get more production from the bench, that provided Gelabale an opportunity on Friday that he took advantage of to the fullest, scoring a career-high eight points on 3-for-3 shooting. It was a Gelabale free throw that untied the game with 5:30 left, and he tapped out an offensive rebound moments later that led to two points for the Sonics.

"Mickaël Gelabale played a really good game," said Hill afterwards.

On Saturday night in Utah, Gelabale played more sparingly, but Hill again called on him down the stretch. His only rebound of the night turned into a Rashard Lewis 3-pointer at the other end to give the Sonics the lead.

"Our assumption about him has, I think, been right," Hill concluded about the back-to-back games. "He's ready to help us. He did well against Indiana and Utah, so I'm excited about him."

Finding playing time for Gelabale still may be something of a challenge, with veterans Earl Watson and Damien Wilkins also fighting for playing time on the perimeter off the bench. With Allen and Lewis as their starters on the wings, the Sonics don't have a lot of extra minutes. What Hill would like to do, when there is playing time available at small forward, is put the ball in Gelabale's hands at times to take advantage of his court vision and passing ability.

"I'm still anxious to see what he can do as a point forward," says Hill, "because I think he can handle the ball as a small forward and you can run some other guys off baseline screens."

"He has a great knack for getting the ball on the run, driving under control and making the next pass - not even the assist pass, but the next pass to lead into the assist, which is really great," adds Chiesa. "So he's moving the ball. He's shown poise under fire by, when the ball comes to him, not turning it over. The last thing he's shown is the ability, when the ball comes to him, to not turn it over."

Indeed, while even the most talented NBA rookies usually struggle with turnovers, Gelabale has played largely mistake-free basketball. In 68 minutes of action, he has committed but one turnover thus far.

At the other end of the court, Gelabale came to the NBA with the ability to be a strong defender on the perimeter, but needing to work on his technique. He's worked at it, and the results are evident to the coaching staff.

"Well, his defense is so good," says Hill. "When you watch the games real close, he's so long that when he's around a loose ball - the ball's coming off the floor or the ball's in the air - he's got a shot of being around it. He's got good hands, he's smart, he makes good decisions."

For Gelabale to be contributing this quickly - at age 23 and while dealing with adjusting to a new culture and learning English, which he says is "better," - bodes well for his future in Seattle. What they have seen over the last two months has given the coaching staff high hopes for Gelabale's career path.

"He's awfully, awfully skilled," says Hill. "There's little doubt in my mind that he can become a good starter in this league. He's quickly become a rotational guy in his career. As he continues to grow and get a little bit bigger and stronger and experienced, there's no question he could be a starter."

"I can't quantitate it, but I'll put it this way," Chiesa says. "He can be a solid NBA player that will know how to score and know how to defend. He's learning his position, how to play well at it. As far as numbers and stuff, who knows, but he's got game - he's got French game."
