원래 드래프트 얼리 엔트리 발표때 해석해서 올리려고 했는데 귀차니즘으로..그러다 보니 참 어중간한 타이밍에 드랍되어서 뻘글화 되어 버렸다. 본문의 뻘글화를 막기 위해서 유러피언 프로스펙트에서 유러피언 얼리 엔트리의 간단한 소개와 전망을 급히 짤라다 투입.-_-;

NBA는 이번 드래프트의 얼리 엔트리 후보들의 명단을 공개했고, 이것은 곧 몇 가지 데이터들을 처리해야할 시간이 왔음을 뜻한다.

일단 지난 3번의 드래프트를 통해서 가장 중요한 것은 처음 얼리 엔트리를 신청했던 선수들 중에 거의 절반 정도가(298명 중 150명) 드래프트 전에 참가를 철회했다는 사실이다. 그래서 대학 농구 지킴이들이 그들의 손을 쥐어짜고 이를 갈면서 얼리엔트리의 불공정함에 대해 울부짖기 전에 몇가지 숫자를 통해 얼리 엔트리에 대한 예상을 해보도록 하자.

올해 얼리 엔트리를 신청한 선수는 모두 84명이다. 이것은 2003년이후 가장 적은 수치이다. 2006년과 2004년에 94명의 선수가 얼리 엔트리를 신청했고 2005년에는 기록적인 110명이 신청을 했었다. 이렇게 얼리 엔트리 숫자가 줄어든 것은 크게 두가지 이유때문이다.

첫째. 2005년 7월에 체결된 CBA에 따라 드래프트 참가 연령이 19세로 제한 되었다. 따라서 고등학교 졸업반들은 드래프트에 참가하기 위해서는 1년을 기다리게 되었다 이 조항은 고졸선수들이 바로 NBA에 참가하는 움직임들을 효과적으로 차단했다. 고등학교 졸업반 선수들이 바로 드래프트에 참가할 수 있었던 2005년에 11명의 고등학교 졸업반 선수들이 드래프트에 참가했고 이중 9명이 뽑혔다.

두번째. NBA와 선수 노조는 해외 선수들이 얼리 엔트리 대상이 된 후에 드래프트를 철회할 수 있는 기회를 단 2번으로 제한했다. 해외 선수들이 19살이 될때까지 얼리 엔트리를 신청하지 못하는 룰과 더블어 이런 룰의 변화가 합쳐져서 해외 선수들은 드래프트를 철회할 수 있는 기회가 절반으로 줄어들었다.

고등학교 졸업후 직행하는 선수가 없고 해외 선수가 2002년 이후 최소인 25명으로 줄어듦으로서 전체적인 얼리 엔트리 신청 선수의 수가 줄어들었다.

언뜻 보기에도 얼리 엔트리 후보들의 명단에는 로터리 픽이 분명한 선수들이 있으며 1라운드에 뽑힐 가능성이 많은 선수들도 대다수 보인다. 그리고 드래프트에 끝까지 참여하지는 않을 것으로 보이는 3학년들도 있다. 그러나 이 선수들도 기꺼이 NBA 프리 드래프트 캠프(올랜도에서 5월 29~6월 4일까지)에 참여할 것이다. 프리 드래프트 캠프에서 선수들은 다음 시즌을 위한 오디션 테입을 체워놓을 수 있다.

그러나 얼리 엔트리 목록을 분석하기 전에 잠시 얼리엔트리를 신청하지 않은 선수들에 대해서 이야기해보자. 몇몇 선수들이 얼리 엔트리를 신청하지 않았다는 것은 대학 농구 팬들이 다음 시즌에도 응원을 할 많은 이유가 있다는 것을 의미한다.

Point guards Darren Collison (UCLA), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), D.J. Augustin (Texas) and Ronald Steele (Alabama) will play college basketball next season. So will super shooters Chris Lofton (Tennessee) and Drew Neitzel (Michigan State); electric wing players Chase Budinger (Arizona), Malik Hairston (Oregon) and Richard Roby (Colorado); and post monsters Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), D.J. White (Indiana) and Hasheem Thabeet (Connecticut).

이에 더해서 드래프트 전에 얼리 엔트리를 철회할 몇몇의 재능있는 선수들, 입학할 슈퍼 신입생들로 인해서 다음 시즌 대학 경기에서도 충분히 재능있는 선수들의 경쟁을 볼 수 있을 것이다.


Feeling a draft

얼리 엔트리 리스트의 발표는 6월 28일에 있을 드래프트의 윤곽을 형성하는데 여러가지 방면에서 도움을 준다. 필자는 얼리 엔트리 철회 마감일인 6월 18일까지 절반정도의 선수들이 얼리 엔트리 신청을 철회할 것이라고 예상하고 있지만, 일단 지금까지 드러나 드래프트의 몇 가지 특징을 보면 다음과 같은 예상을 할 수 있다.

- 로터리 상위 픽들은 거의 결정이 되었다. 오하이오 스테잇의 그랙 오든과 텍사스의 케빈 듀란트라는 쌍두마차를 비롯하여, 노스 케롤라이나의 브랜든 라이트, 플로리다의 알 호포드, 코리 브루어, 조아킴 노아, 캔사스의 줄리안 라이트의 로터리 픽은 거의 확실해 보인다. 드래프트에서 이변이 빈번하게 일어나긴 하지만 위에 상위 7명이 로터리픽 밖으로 밀려날 가능성은 거의 없어 보인다.

-1라운드에서 대학 졸업반들의 존재감은 과거 두시즌에 비해 더 감소할 것으로 보인다. 뛰어난 재능을 가진 언드클래스들이 드래프트에 남을 것으로 예상되기 때문이다. 1라운드가 확실해 보이는 대학 졸업반 선수는 플로리다 주립의 알 쏜튼, 텍사스 A&M의 에이시 로 정도이다. 여기에 위스콘신의 알란도 터커나 라이스의 모리스 알몬드, 피츠버그의 애런 그레이가 1라운드 가능성이 그나마 높다.각 팀들의 GM들에게 자신들이 1라운드에서 뽑을 가치가 있다는 확신을 어느정도 심어준 선수로는 네바다의 닉 페제카스나 보스턴 컬리지의 자레드 더들리가 있다. 2006년에 8명의 졸업반 선수가 1라운드에서 뽑혔고 2005년에는 10명이 뽑혔다. 언더클래스들의 예상치못한 철회러쉬에도 불구하고 대학 졸업반 선수들은 올해 8명 혹은 10명씩 뽑히기는 힘들어 보인다.

- 드래프트에서의 인터네셔널 임팩트도 최근 몇년에 비해 축소될 것으로 보인다. 중국의 광둥타이거의 이첸리엔은 로터리에 뽑힐 것으로 보이고 이탈리아 볼로냐의 마르코 벨리넬리, ACB(스페인리그) 스타인 타우의 티아고 스플리터, DKV 유벤투스의 루디 페르난데즈 정도가 1라운드에 뽑힐 것이다. 그 외에는 크로아티아 KK Zagreb의 빅맨 Ante Tomic, 멤피스의 파우 가솔의 동생이며 스페인리그 Akasvayu Girona 에서 뛰고 있는 마크 가솔 정도가 1라운드에서 관심 정도를 끌수 있을 것으로 보인다.

얼리 엔트리 리스트가 공개된 이후 다음 드래프트의 중요한 날은 5월 22일이다. 이날은 N.J Secaucus에서 드래프트 로터리가 결정된다. 이날은 그랙 오든과 케빈 듀란트에 대한 생각으로 머리를 채우고 있는 로터리 팀들에게는 아주 중요한 날이다.

몇몇 팀들은 2007년 드래프트가 자신들의 프랜차이즈에 드라마틱한 임팩트를 줄 것이라는 사실을 이미 알고 있다. 이 팀들은 2개 이상의 1라운드 픽을 가진 팀들이다.

필라델피아 식서스는 최소한 1픽 팀이 결정되기 전까지는 드래프트의 제왕이다. 필라델피아는 로터리 픽과 더블어 21번 픽과 30번 픽을 가지고 있다. 식서스는 안드레 이궈달라, 안드레 밀러, 사무엘 달람베어, 카일 코버등의 젊은 유망주들을 보유하고 있으며 이번 드래프트는 식서스가 다음 시즌에 다시 플레이오프를 다툴 수 있는 팀으로 도약하는데 기폭제가 될 것이다.

샬롯 밥켓츠(로터리 픽과 22번픽)은 1라운드 픽 2개를 가지고 있으며 디트로이트(15번.27번)도 마찬가지이다. 피닉스는 1라운드 픽 2개(24번 29번)를 가지고 있지만 만약 애틀란타 호크스의 로터리 픽이 3번픽안 뽑히지 않는다면 피닉스는더 높은 픽을 얻을 수 있다. 만약 애틀란타가 상위 3번내에 들지 못한다면 애틀란타는 조 존슨을 호크스로 보내는 사인&트레이드의 일부분으로서 자신들의 픽을 피닉스에 양도해야한다.

시카고 불스는 에디 커리 트레이드의 한 조건으로 닉스와 1라운드 위치를 바꿀 권리를 가지고 있으며 올해 이 권리를 사용할 것으로 보인다. 시카고는 현재 23번째에 있는 반면 닉스의 위치는 로터리에서 결정될 것이다.


유러피언 얼리 엔트리 분석 - 유러피언 익스프레스 펌

Stanko Barac (2m18 C 1986 Siroki)

The big center is a surprise this year, averaging 13.0ppg and 7.1rpg in the Adriatic league. Of course, he plays not in a top level team but his skills seem pretty diverse as he also can hit the three ball (14/39 35.9%). If he stays in the Draft, he can be a second rounder, but will probably stay in Europe and try to get a Euroleague spot somewhere.

Rodrigue Beaubois (1m82 PG 1988 Cholet)

Totally unknown in Europe, he is quick and athletic PG. He saw some garbage minutes with the pro team of Cholet this season during 4 games but did not score. He probably just wants to put his name in there to get some recognition which he did, but now he has to show something on the court. But he is still very young.

Marco Belinelli (1m95 SG 1986 Climamio Bologna)

One of the quickest shooters on the continent, who can score from nearly everywhere with a huge range on the court. But he has very good athleticism and can be a great defender. He faced a lot more attention this year so his offensive productivity did not progress statistically but he developped a scoring potential against stronger defenses. He has good size for a SG spot, even in the NBA.

Hakan Demirel (1m92 PG 1986 Fenerbahce Ulker)

A surprise to see his name here, as he is not really a NBA type player and he is listed as 1985 born on the Euroleague HP. I personally don't know what is correct now, but he is not a draft pick in any way.

Romain Duport (2m13 C 1986 Le Havre)

He did not play at all in the beginning of the season as he concentrated to play with the Espoirs team, and win the title there. After this, he joined the pro roster on a more regular basis and started to see some minutes, which he used perfectly going for even 16 points against Orléans or 15 against Gravelines. Duport has a nice stroke, even from behind the three-point line. He has rebounding skills but can develop in that area.

Kyrylo Fesenko (2m13 C 1986 Cherkasy)

Personally, I don't know this player at all, having never seen him play so far. His player profile on fibaeurope.com describes him as "one of the most promising young Ukrainian centers". He is having 6.7ppg with his Ukrainian team in 18 minutes of play. He was already in the Draft last year, so he will probably remain and hopes to get a chance in the second round.

Vladimir Golubovic (2m13 C 1986 Vojvodina)

Another pretty unknown center from Serbia, he averaged 4.3ppg and 3.4rpg in the FIBA EuroCup with his team that does not play the Adriatic league.

Rafael Hettsheimeier (2m06 PF 1986 Akasvayu)

The Brazilian born did not get a lot of attention this year. He played in the LEB2, the third spanish division where he could average nearly 10 points per game.

Deyan Ivanov (2m03 PF 1986 Drac Inca)

Totally unknown player from Bulgaria. He saw some minutes with the Bulgarion NT during the 2005 Eurobasket where he could score 3.8ppg and grab 3.0rpg.

Kaloyan Ivanov (2m03 PF 1986 Vive Menorca)

As unknown as his twin brother, he managed to get just 8 minutes during Eurobasket 2005. But he plays this year in the ACB with Vive Menorca where he avareges 10 minutes per game.

Maxym Ivshyn (2m08 PF 1986 Azovmash)

Limited minutes in the FIBA Eurocup this year with the Ukrainian top team. So not a lot information about is available.

Petteri Koponen (1m92 PG 1988 Honka)

The top Finnish PG of his generation and probably the most talented player out of the North for a long time. He shined at the Nike Hoop summit and got a lot of hype then. Jerry West went to Finland to scout him before the Memphis event. He is not a typical NBA PG, but he can become a nice addition from the bench. He has great courst vision and nice shooting touch.

Ivan Maras (2m06 PF 1986 Buducnost)

6.4ppg and 3.1rpg for this young man from Montenegro, he ahs a great shoot as shows his free-throw percentage of 86% which is excellent for a big man. Can hit the three, but needs to become more consistent from behind the line.

Manuchar Markoishvili (1m95 SG 1986 Olimpija)

The Georgian SG is already present in the European professional leagues for several seasons. There is still some doubt about his real age, as there are sources that tell him to be born in 1984. But Markoishvili is actually a scoring SG with good athleticism and good defensive skills.

Caner Oner (2m01 SF 1987 Alpella)

12.4 pts in the Turkish league for this young kid don't look bad.

Miroslav Raduljica (2m13 C 1988 FMP)

Very talented Center from Serbia. He is actually a real center, with a good body and nice touch. He can play with his back to the Basket and he has great rebounding possibilities. Still very young and should get some minutes on the European level with FMP next season. If he does not get a promise, he will take his name out this year.

Nikita Shabalkin (2m06 SF 1986 Samara)

Shabalkin is palying an outstanding season with the small team of Samara. He averaged 22.5ppg in the Fiba EuroCup Challenge at a great 72% from 2 and 66% from 3. He also added 7.0rpg. He should get a spot in a better team next year and show how good he can become. He will probably not stay in the Draft, but he will definitely worth a closer look over next year.

Vladimir Stimac (2m06 PF 1987 Valmiera)

He has a surprising season in the Baltic league, as he is still very young but he can use his big body to play really inside. In 20 minutes per game, he could average 11.8ppg and grab 8.0rpg in the Baltic league which are good numbers for such a young player. But he seems undersized for the NBA Center position and his lack of speed will not allow him to play PF.

Gabriel Szalay (2m16 C 1986 Norrkoping)

Unknown by most of the observers, he somehow managed to score 9.2ppg with his swedish team in the FIBA EuroCup Challenge. He has a nice size for a 1986 born and has good shot blocking timing. Should move to a stronger team to improve and play against better teams.

Ante Tomic (2m18 C 1987 KK Zagreb)

One of the biggest prospects on this years early entrants list. He has a great range of skills coming from good shooting touch to great passing game. He has to develop his body more and then he can become a legit NBA player. At the moment, he can not get minutes with a NBA team but he will probably get a closer look for a first round spot. He can then develop 1-2 more seasons, maybe with a Euroleague team to be ready for the NBA.

Caio Torres (2m11 PF 1987 Estudiantes)

The spanish PF got his first regular minutes with Estudiantes in the ACB this year where he could average 4.4ppg. Still very young, he has two more years to develop but to get a first look at, this year is good.

Artem Zabelin (2m13 PF 1988 Avtodor)

A seven footer born in 1988 with good athleticism and coordination is always already a good start. He is actually playing in the third Russian league with the very young team of Saratov. Unfortunately, I could not find any stats of him with that team.
